Beautiful Piece From Fossil By T. Paslay
I've been a fan of Fossil watches ever since I was given one from my parents when I got my first real job at 12 years old. I've bought five since then and they always have a nice sleek/modern look to them whilst maintaining a reasonable price tag. The other reason I consistently buy them is that they last forever with very little or no care/maintenance. My previous stainless steel dress watch was a Fossil Blue I received as a graduation present 13 years ago and it's still keeping perfect time while complimenting any dress attire. The finish had begun to wear which is why I decided it was time for a new one.
The Fossil Grant Twist is VERY eye catching. I knew that this would be my new watch the second I laid my eyes on it. It had everything I was looking for; exposed movement without looking tacky or cheap, automatic self-winding, stainless steel and a nice upscale modern look that would stand the test of time (no pun intended). It's interesting to me that the black version of the watch is an extra $20. I understand that the process is more costly, but, in person, the stainless steel provides a brilliant contrast to the face that catches the eye and highlights the overall design. The gold gear in the bottom center is a great focal point as it constantly spins back and forth. The designers at Fossil did a fantastic job in terms of the overall symmetry and aesthetics. At first glance the golden gear and bracket that hold it look like a symbol or trademark.
Now, let's break down the specifics. This is an automatic winding watch. This means that there's a weighted pendulum inside the watch that spins with the motion of your arm throughout the day. This is what winds the watch. You do not need to periodically wind this yourself as you would with standard mechanical watches. As long as you wear this regularly, you shouldn't have to worry about it. A nice feature that the Grant has is that it also features a battery backup. So, if you don't wear the watch for a while, it will still keep time. If the golden gear is spinning, you're running on mechanical. If the gear is stationary, you're running on battery.
The large dial situated top center is the watch face. It is very well detailed and the tick-marks representing the numbers are highly polished stainless steel. They shine brilliantly. The small dial on the right counts the seconds. You can watch the gold gear turn the smaller gear that turns the second hand. The small cutout on the left is the spring that powers the gears. There's a black guard plate on the top of it that reads "Fossil" this plate turns as the gear turns from your motion throughout the day. It's a very nice touch and showcases the amount of detail and thought that went into this watch. The gold central gear, we've already discussed. The face of the watch as a whole is matte black and has a great contrasting texture that is subtle, but ties the overall design together. The crown is featured at the top instead of the side and serves only to set the watch. I actually really like this placement as it complements the overall symmetry of the watch. It's also nice because there is no crown digging into the top of your hand when you bend your wrist.
Overall this watch is, in my opinion, the crown jewel of the Fossil collection right now. It's eye-catching and elegant. It has a modern design, but its nuances are subtle and work together well enough that it should remain timeless. It has a weight that attests to its solid construction without being cumbersome.
